The B.C. Labour Heritage Centre is an independent not-for-profit historical society with charity status, working to preserve and expand the knowledge of the important role of workers in the history of British Columbia. To further support the research and writing of BC labour history, the Centre is soliciting, for use in all of these capacities, original works of historical research exploring some aspect of BC’s rich labour history.
The Centre is interested in articles of three different lengths, focusing on some aspect, event, or individual in BC labour history broadly defined. Papers that explore underexamined aspects of BC’s labour history, including, but not limited to: women, racialized workers, “unskilled” or low-status workers, and regions of the province outside of the Lower Mainland and South Vancouver Island are especially welcome.
This Day in History: Approximately 500 words, focused on some element of BC labour history. Please include sources. Authors of this piece will receive an honorarium of $100.
Research Report: Approximately 1000 words, these pieces should illuminate one underexplored aspect of BC labour history. While primary source research is appreciated, it is not required. Authors of these pieces will receive a $200 honorarium for their work.
Historical Essay: Approximately 3000 words (excluding footnotes and bibliography), these essays should offer original insight into an important, unexplored element of BC labour history. These longer pieces are encouraged to include some primary source research. Authors of these larger pieces will receive a $350 honorarium for their work.
Word count excludes footnotes and bibliography. Articles reviewed by committee, with author included in the editing process.
If you are interested in writing a piece for this initiative, please submit a short summary of your intended submission (approximately 50-100 words) to info@labourheritagecentre.ca with ATTN: Articles Project in the subject field by October 10th. Please include links to other writing or details about your experience/interest in labour history.
Successful submissions notified by October 15th, final papers due by or before December 15th, 2015 unless alternate deadlines are negotiated in advance.
