On January 26 from 9-11 pm more than 200 PBS stations will broadcast “The Mine Wars” in the premier show of The American Experience series for 2016.
The film script is based on James Green’s book, The Devil is Here in These Hills: West Virginia’s Coal Miners and Their Battle for Freedom (Atlantic Monthly Press, 2015). The paperback edition of Green’s highly-acclaimed book will be published in early January and priced at $20. In their review the New York Times says, “The story James Green has to tell is among the best and largely forgotten American stories. It’s about property rights versus human rights, about hard men and women and about violent conflict.”
Produced and directed by award-winning Boston film maker Randy MacLowry and his team at The Film Posse, “The Mine Wars” depicts an astonishing saga of class struggle and social redemption with suspenseful narrative, stunning photos and moving testimony. According to Green, who worked closely with the MacLowry on the script, “The Mine Wars” will be the first program in The American Experience’s long and distinguished series to depict the struggles of our nation’s industrial workers to win union rights and protections as well as the basic freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment.
