I am sad to report that Gary Cappy, of Grass Roots Press, which has printed the LAWCHA newsletter for many years has passed away. I just learned of the news, but Gary passed on August 29th, 2015.
Gary was a Pennsylvania native who attended West Virginia University. A long-time social justice activist, Gary worked with the UFW on a grape boycott in Pittsburg before moving to Bakersfield, California to work with Cesar Chavez. While in California, he learned how to print.
After moving to New York City, he and his wife, Miriam Melendez, began Grass Roots Press. They moved the business to Raleigh in 1988.
LAWCHA fondly remembers the skill, generosity, and support Gary offered to several generations of LAWCHA Executive Assistants in designing and publishing the organization’s newsletter.
