The state’s decision to curtail public access to the Georgia Archives has been the cause celebre for academics and family genealogists to mobilize in support of free and open access to our history. Not only is the archive’s 10-person staff likely to be cut, as of November 1, only limited public appointments will be available to view the archive’s collections.
Historian Jim Cobb urges anyone interested in preserving open access to American history to go directly through the office of Governor Nathan Deal. “Please take the time,” he writes, “to go here <http://gov.georgia.gov/webform/contact-governor-domestic-form> and urge him to reverse this horrific decision before the padlock goes in place.
